Some questions you have and some questions we hope you ask!
No. All soap is the result of a chemical reaction between lye, sodium hydroxide, and oil. The result is a combination of salts of the various oils. The lye is used up in the process and is not present in the finished product.
Not necessarily! A true “soap” does not have detergents which dissolve the natural oils on the skin. Mass Market “soap” usually has detergents (like Sodium Laurel Sulfate, SLS, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, SLES), which can leave the skin feeling dry and tight.
Society has evolved into a common practice of daily or every other day bathing. The use of underarm deodorant is almost universal in the modern world. Deodorant soap may be beneficial to athletes and others involved in activities that involve heavy sweating, but the need for deodorant soap is not necessary for typical daily life.
Mass market “Body Wash” and “soap” contain detergents. They are formulated to strip the natural oils from your skin. Those natural oils protect your skin from inflammation, bacteria and other harmful pollutants in the air.
Triple Milled Soap has had the natural glycerin squeezed out of it by the use of pressure. As glycerin is a natural product of the soap making process and is beneficial to the moisture balance of the skin, we think having glycerin in soap is a good idea.
Parabens are used to preserve products. As reported in the Journal of Applied Toxicology ( January 2004), Parabens were found in a small sample of breast cancer tumors. While our purpose here is not to deep dive into how they got there, we believe avoiding parabens is a prudent thing. And they are not in any Sanibel Naturals product.
Shea Butter is extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree, found in Africa. It is a tree nut, so if you are allergic to tree nuts, you should be aware of the potential for allergic reactions.
Shea Butter is available in unprocessed, refined and ultra-refined forms. Refining processes remove the “earthy” odor present in the primary form of shea butter.
The main reason for this growing interest has been the recognition by the cosmetics industry (and its consumers) of shea butter’s therapeutic benefits—ultra-violet light protection, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, regenerative, anti-eczema and anti-wrinkle properties.
We are very excited to have products with Avocado oil. Don’t just rely on our word, here’s what The Naked Chemist has to say:
Anti Inflammatory: Avocado oil is lovely for a sensitive, irritated skin, it contains potent Phytosterols that help to take the fire out of an itch.
Anti Ageing: Studies have found, that the oil can mobilize and increase collagen in connective tissue, helping to keep skin soft and mobile, this is why one of Avocado Oil benefits, is to help protect against ageing.
Cellular regeneration: The oil is also great for a thin, fragile skin, it’s restructuring properties is due to its high Sterol content, which is around 10%.
Research has found that repeated massage with avocado oil, gives significant hydration to the epidermis and significantly improves the skins elasticity.
This combined with its Anti Ageing properties, is why it is an ingredient of choice for a dry, mature skin type.
High Nutritive Value: Avocado is rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, lecithin, squalane and skin loving Fatty Acids, which is why it is such an important oil.
Hydrating: The oil is extremely rich in Oleic Acid. A wonderful moisturising and regenerating fatty acid, that is naturally found in human sebum (oil).
One of the Avocado oil benefits is that it permeates the skin quite deeply, it has one of the highest penetration rates amongst other similar oils.
Avocado naturally contains Lecithin and squalane, together they have powerful skin healing properties, which is why we combine them in our formulas to maximize effectiveness. (www.thenakedchemist.com)
Soy candles are from a renewable plant source, and do not give off petroleum by-products as wax candles do. Soy candles do not produce soot, also a petroleum by-product. The clean burn means there are no petrochemicals entering your body through your lungs.
Soy wax is soft. Pure Soy Candles are always in a container. They are too soft to be made into a pillar candle or other free standing forms. Some Soy candles have other waxes added to them. Palm wax helps to harden the candle, but Palm wax is believed to promote the de-forestation of critical habitat.
